About the Album
The Green Album is the band’s sixth studio album and the second part of the “Happy Because Pregnant” duology. It was originally intended that the interval between the two albums would match the length of a woman’s pregnancy, but the Green Album was released later because the label did not want to launch it during the “dead season.” The record includes hits such as “Birthday,” “Wolves,” and “Rivers” (a duet with Natalia Vetlitskaya).
Review
The art-punk sound and Pokrovskiy’s provocative, frenzied vocal style in the Green Album turn even what is essentially a lyrical ballad, “Wolves,” into a paranoid anthem. And that’s not to mention the barrage of hard-hitting rock ’n’ roll tracks! “Schizophrenically fun” is probably the most accurate way to describe this release. Its biggest hit, “Birthday,” is a wild, neurotic song about a guy whose birthday no one shows up for. Naturally, given the depressing scenario, it’s fitting to throw in a swear word—and Max does just that, gleefully adding the Russian equivalent of “f***” into the chorus. This drew criticism from producers and journalists, who scolded the band, saying, “The stage isn’t a bar, and we’re not brainless, disrespectful degenerates.” Max shrugged it off: “A lot of people come to our shows just to hear that word!” Still, he didn’t object too much when a “clean” version of the track made its way to radio airplay. As for those who felt one curse word wasn’t enough…
